Every year on August 31, Kyrgyzstan marks its primary national holiday—Independence Day. On this day in 1991, an extraordinary session of the Supreme Council of the Kyrgyz Republic became one of the first among the Soviet republics to adopt the “Declaration on the State Independence of the Kyrgyz Republic,” establishing the nation as an independent, sovereign, and democratic state.
In his celebratory address for the 35th anniversary of independence, President Sadyr Japarov highlighted the country’s recent achievements and recalled key historical and international milestones. He emphasized that independence is an invaluable legacy passed down by ancestors who endured centuries of trials, expressing special gratitude to the “legendary parliament” that adopted the founding declaration.
President Japarov noted that Kyrgyzstan has entered a new era of growth, characterized by dynamic economic progress and warm hospitality. He also celebrated Kyrgyzstan earning the trust of over 100 nations to be elected as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.
The milestone celebration coincides with two major international events: the historical summit commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and the official opening of the 6th World Nomad Games.
“The strength of a state lies in the intellectual potential and moral integrity of its citizens. We must continue our historical path, preserve and strengthen our roots, and demonstrate high cultural standards in whichever field we work, thereby reinforcing our nation. We must accomplish this through every action, honest labor, pursuit of knowledge, and unity. We have no other homeland. Kyrgyzstan is our only hope and eternal sanctuary!” the Kyrgyz leader stated in his address.
On September 1, Bishkek will host the meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Kyrgyzstan for a state visit ahead of the summit.
Later today, the new “Bishkek Arena” stadium will host the grand opening ceremony of the 6th World Nomad Games. The main cultural and scientific programs of the games will take place from September 2 to 6 in Cholpon-Ata and the Kyrchyn Gorge in the Issyk-Kul region.
