Turkestan Nominated as Cultural Capital of the Islamic World for 2027

This initiative was raised during the 15th session of the ICESCO General Conference currently taking place in Kazan, according to Kazinform.

During the meeting held on May 13-14, 2026, participants reviewed the organization’s activities from 2020-2025 and discussed the strategic plan for 2026-2029.

The Vice-Minister of Culture and Information of Kazakhstan, Rustam Ali, highlighted Kazakhstan’s achievements in developing the cultural heritage of the Islamic world. He noted that in recent years, Kazakh traditions such as the game “Togyzkumalak,” the decorative art of “Oyu-Ornek,” and the “Karmakshy Zhyraulary” oral poetry school were included in the ICESCO Heritage List.

Furthermore, the Kazakh delegation announced that the II International Conference dedicated to the heritage of Al-Farabi will be held in Almaty in 2026, organized in cooperation with ICESCO. The General Conference, held every four years, is currently attended by representatives from 53 member states.
