A new coronavirus variant, XFG, is spreading across Russia, health officials report. The strain has already been detected in 85 regions of the country. According to the latest data, about 90% of hospitalized COVID-19 patients have been diagnosed with this particular mutation.
Experts warn that XFG appears to be more contagious than previous variants. However, its symptoms largely resemble those of a common respiratory infection. Patients typically experience cough and fever, general weakness, severe sore throat and, in some cases, hoarseness or temporary voice loss.
Physician Svetlana Andreeva says the emergence of new mutations is a natural process. In her view, there are currently no grounds for introducing mass lockdown measures.
Instead, specialists advise focusing on strengthening the immune system. More than ten types of vaccines are currently available, which, although not providing permanent immunity, can offer reliable protection for a certain period and reduce the risk of severe illness.
