Hungary has introduced new amendments to traffic regulations that significantly increase fines for speeding, TuraNews.kz reports citing Azertac.
According to the Index publication, the government justified the tougher sanctions by the rise in road accidents and the need to improve driver discipline.
Under the updated rules, the fine amount will now depend on how much the speed limit is exceeded. In some cases, temporary suspension of a driver’s license is also possible.
Special attention will be given to violations in cities and populated areas, as authorities consider such offenses particularly dangerous due to high traffic density. Officials noted that most serious accidents occur in urban and rural settlements.
The Hungarian police announced readiness to actively use traffic cameras and mobile patrols to detect violations. Representatives of the Interior Ministry emphasized that the goal is not to increase budget revenues but to reduce accidents and save lives.
Local experts note that similar measures have proven effective in several European countries, but questions remain about how quickly drivers will adapt and whether the new rules will lead to a significant drop in accident rates.
