October 1 Marks International Coffee Day

Coffee lovers across the globe are celebrating International Coffee Day today. The occasion has been officially observed since 2015, though the first celebrations date back to 1983 in Japan, organized by local coffee associations.

On this day, enthusiasts highlight fascinating facts about the world’s favorite drink: coffee trees can grow taller than 9 meters and live up to 70 years; the beverage contains more than 800 aromatic compounds. The popular “Americano” originated during World War II, when soldiers diluted strong European coffee with water.

Finland tops the global chart in coffee consumption with an average of five cups per person daily, while Japan ranks third worldwide. Coffee is also the second most traded commodity in the world, after oil.
