U.S. to Partially Lift Sanctions on Syria, Says White House

U.S. President Donald Trump is set to sign an executive order lifting certain sanctions on Syria, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced during a daily press briefing, according to Anadolu Agency.

Leavitt stated the decision is aimed at supporting Syria’s path toward stability and peace. However, she clarified that sanctions will remain in place against former President Bashar al-Assad, his allies, human rights violators, narcotics traffickers, individuals involved in chemical weapons programs, members of ISIS and affiliated groups, as well as Iran-backed militias.

She also recalled that during Trump’s recent trip to the Middle East, he met with Syria’s new leadership and pledged to ease sanctions.

“The President is committed to supporting a stable, united Syria that lives peacefully with itself and its neighbors,” Leavitt concluded.
