The event celebrated the 10th anniversary of Aitys being added to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The joint cultural nomination of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan was approved in 2015. Organizers emphasized that the event offered a rare opportunity for members of the diaspora in France and across Europe to reconnect with their rich cultural heritage through this improvisational art.
“As we watched the performances, we felt a deep emotional and spiritual connection. The Aitys showcased the strong cultural bond between our two nations,” said Askar Abdrakhmanov, Kazakhstan’s Permanent Delegate to UNESCO.
In the realm of Kazakh culture, Aitys is a traditional art form, specifically a poetic singing contest where two Akyns (poets and musicians) improvise verses while competing with each other. Akyns are performers known for their skill in oral poetry, storytelling, and musical accompaniment, particularly with instruments like the Dombyra. Aitys contests, often held during public events, feature the Akyns improvising verses and melodies, showcasing their wit, creativity, and knowledge of the Kazakh language and history
