Apple Accelerates Shift of iPhone Production from China to India

Apple has significantly stepped up its move to relocate iPhone production from China to India, Bloomberg reports.

As of March 2024, India had assembled iPhones worth $22 billion—nearly 60% more than the previous year. Currently, one in five iPhones is manufactured in India, signaling a major supply chain shift, especially after pandemic-era disruptions in China.

Most devices are being produced at Foxconn’s plant in southern India. Apple has not yet issued an official comment on the matter.

India’s technology minister recently announced that iPhone exports from India hit ₹1.5 trillion by March 2025. The shift is partly driven by the U.S. administration’s trade policies, including President Donald Trump’s tariff adjustment announced in February.

On April 11, the Trump administration excluded smartphones and computers from import tariffs, giving tech giants like Apple and NVIDIA a boost. However, core tariffs on Chinese exports remain—currently reaching up to 145%.

As a result, iPhones made in India now enter the U.S. tariff-free, while China-manufactured units face increasing duties, prompting companies to diversify production.
