Dmitry Popko Advances to the Quarterfinals in Mexico

Kazakhstan’s Dmitry Popko, ranked No. 175 in the world, has secured a spot in the quarterfinals of the Challenger tournament in Morelos, Mexico.

In the second round, Popko faced Germany’s Max Wiskandt, currently ranked No. 497. Despite the significant ranking gap, the match was highly competitive.

Popko claimed the first set 7-5, but Wiskandt fought back in the second, winning on a tiebreak — 7-6 (7-4). The decisive third set also went to a tiebreak, where Popko emerged victorious — 7-6 (7-5).

The match lasted 2 hours and 51 minutes. During the contest, Popko hit 10 aces and converted 3 out of 8 break points. Wiskandt recorded 6 aces and secured 2 breaks from 5 break-point opportunities.

In the quarterfinals, Popko will face Argentina’s Juan Pablo Ficovich, the world No. 155.

Just a week ago, Popko triumphed at the Morelia Challenger in Mexico, which helped him climb to No. 170 in the ATP Live rankings.
