Türkiye presents an even more remarkable case: with a total population of 85.66 million, the elderly population reached 9.11 million, accounting for 10.6% of the country.
This means Türkiye’s senior population is larger than that of 96 countries, including Switzerland, Serbia, Ireland, New Zealand, Armenia, and Iceland.
Globally, China leads in the number of elderly people, with 208.1 million in 2024, followed by India (103.6 million) and the U.S. (61.9 million).
Monaco has the highest proportion of elderly residents, with 36.2% of its 38,631 citizens being seniors. Japan (29.8%), Italy (24.6%), Portugal (24.5%), and Greece (23.9%) also have high senior populations.
Conversely, the lowest elderly population ratios are found in Qatar (1.7%), the UAE (1.8%), Zambia (1.9%), Chad, Sudan (2.1%), and the Central African Republic (2.2%).
