Uzbekistan Officially Joins the Aarhus Convention

Uzbekistan is strengthening national measures to protect the environment and ensure access to reliable information about its condition.

This step is enshrined in Article 49 of the Constitution of the Republic of Uzbekistan. In this regard, a law was adopted on “Accession to the Convention on Access to Information, Public Participation in Decision-Making, and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters” (Aarhus, June 25, 1998).

For reference, the Aarhus Convention is an international agreement developed by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). It aims to guarantee access to environmental information, public participation in decision-making, and fair judicial proceedings on environmental issues.

The convention was signed on June 25, 1998, in Aarhus, Denmark, during the 4th European Ministerial Conference on Environmental Protection. A total of 38 countries participated. It is considered a key international document that protects human rights in environmental matters. The agreement ensures access to environmental data and promotes cooperation between governmental bodies, citizens, and organizations.

The main goal of the convention is to regulate public involvement in decision-making processes that may negatively impact the environment and public health while ensuring fair judicial proceedings.

According to the convention, state authorities and organizations are required to provide citizens with information on air, water, soil, and other environmental components. Additionally, they must facilitate public participation in developing programs and strategies aimed at improving the environmental sector.
