According to Euronews, Zelenskyy stated on X after his nightly address that his Chief of Staff, Andriy Yermak, had a phone conversation with US National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, and that results could be seen as early as next week.
Yermak confirmed the call in a separate post, stating he “discussed with Waltz the next steps towards a just and lasting peace,” adding they exchanged views on “harmonizing positions” in bilateral US-Ukraine relations.
Zelenskyy also noted “extensive international work” on Wednesday ahead of the EU summit in Brussels on Thursday. He spoke with the leaders of the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia, and Germany, thanking them for their support.
This comes after the US halted intelligence sharing with Ukraine.
“We took a step back, paused, and are reviewing all aspects of this relationship,” National Security Advisor Mike Waltz stated on Wednesday.
However, Trump administration officials emphasized that positive talks between Washington and Kyiv would mean the pause would be temporary.
It’s worth noting that swiftly ending the conflict between Russia and Ukraine was a key campaign promise of Trump. Last week, he publicly accused Zelenskyy, who was visiting Washington, of being unprepared for peace. On Wednesday, Trump revealed he received a letter from Zelenskyy stating his readiness to work “towards achieving a lasting peace.”
