PKK Announces Ceasefire and Readiness for Dissolution

The Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) has declared a ceasefire starting March 1, in response to Abdullah Öcalan’s February 27 call for the group to lay down arms and disband.

According to BBC, the PKK, which is banned in Kazakhstan, has expressed agreement with the content of Öcalan’s statement and pledged to comply with its demands.

Abdullah Öcalan, who remains imprisoned on İmralı Island, issued his appeal through a delegation from the People’s Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party), urging the PKK leadership to convene a congress to decide on the disarmament of all factions and the organization’s dissolution.

On February 28, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan stated:
“As of yesterday, we have taken a step into a new era – an era of a terrorism-free Türkiye.”
