Azerbaijan Doubled Gas Supplies to Bulgaria

This means that Azerbaijan is now meeting a significant portion of Bulgaria’s demand for "blue fuel."

Azerbaijan’s annual gas deliveries to Bulgaria in 2024 amounted to 2 billion cubic meters. This was announced by Azerbaijan’s Ambassador to Sofia, Guseyn Guseynov, as reported by Kazinform agency.

“We started increasing the gas supply volume from 1 billion cubic meters to 1.2 billion cubic meters, then to 1.5 billion cubic meters, and by the end of last year, the volume of gas supplied from Azerbaijan reached 2 billion cubic meters. This means that we are now fulfilling the majority of Bulgaria’s demand for blue fuel,” said the diplomat.

He recalled that in 2013, Azerbaijan’s state oil company signed a 25-year agreement with Bulgaria’s company “BulgarGaz” to supply 1 billion cubic meters of gas annually.

The Ambassador noted that after the energy crisis in Bulgaria, Azerbaijan began increasing gas deliveries at the country’s request.

Guseynov also reminded that in 2022, Azerbaijan signed a memorandum of understanding on strategic energy partnership with the EU.

According to him, Azerbaijan currently exports gas to 12 European countries.

“Azerbaijan considers Bulgaria to be a very important country for gas transit because your country has a well-developed internal gas transportation network,” the diplomat concluded.

At the beginning of January, Azerbaijan temporarily suspended gas deliveries to Bulgaria and Serbia due to a technical malfunction at the Shah Deniz Alpha (SDA) platform in the Caspian Sea. Later, on January 18, the technical operator BP announced that after the repair of the pipeline, the platform was put back into operation.
