Municipal Elections in Azerbaijan: Over 1,500 Candidates Announced
More than 1,500 candidates have been nominated for the upcoming municipal elections in Azerbaijan.
The announcement made by the Chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) Mazahir Panahov at the next meeting of the CEC.
“The number of candidates for elections, which will take place across 118 districts, has reached 1,531,” Panahov stated during a CEC meeting, noting that the figure could rise as the nomination process will continue until the end of December.
During the elections, over 8,000 members will be elected to 685 municipal councils. The meeting also registered authorized representatives of five political parties: Yeni Azerbaijan, the Azerbaijan National Independence Party, Böyük Qurtuluş, the Democratic Reforms Party, and Umid.
Additionally, amendments were made to the composition of district election commissions for several constituencies, alongside discussions on other ongoing matters.
Key Election Timeline
Under Azerbaijan’s Election Code, the submission of electoral documents begins on December 10, 2025, and ends on December 30. The pre-election campaign will start on January 6 and conclude on January 28 of the following year.
Traditionally, Azerbaijan’s municipal elections are held every five years on December 23, with the last elections conducted in December 2019. However, this year, the CEC has decided to reschedule the elections to early next year.
