Kazakhstan Discovers Promising Rare Earth Metal Deposits

At a government meeting, Minister of Industry and Infrastructure Development Kanat Sharlapaev announced the discovery of promising rare earth metal exploration sites in Kazakhstan.

As part of the state geological study aimed at developing the rare earth metals sector, ongoing exploration is taking place on 12 sites, according to Primeminister.kz.

“Currently, there is already data showing the potential of the Kuyrektikol site, which is estimated to hold around 800,000 tons of rare earth metals,” said Kanat Sharlapaev.

The exploration of rare earth metals (REM) is being conducted by private companies such as Cove Capital and HMS Bergbau.

In addition, Kazakhstan is implementing innovative geological exploration methods.

Minister Sharlapaev noted that one of these methods is aerogeophysical research, which provides modern, high-quality data on the structure of the Earth’s crust and is essential for attracting investments in mineral exploration. A pilot project is covering promising regions of Kazakhstan, including Northern Pribalhashye and the Kalba-Narym zone.

Further work on digitizing geological data is planned as part of a separate project, which will use innovative data processing techniques and artificial intelligence technologies. The use of AI will enable fast and efficient analysis of the country’s accumulated geological information to identify potential prospects.

“Additionally, in May of this year, a partnership agreement was signed between ‘Tau-Ken Samruk’ and Ivanhoe to jointly conduct geological exploration. In this collaboration, Typhoon technology will be used in Kazakhstan, which can detect deposits of copper, gold, and silver at depths of up to 1.5 km,” Sharlapaev stated.
