Expert Calls for Criminal Investigation Into Mass Seal Deaths in the Caspian Sea

The recent discovery of 2,000 dead seals along the Caspian Sea coastline in the Mangystau region has prompted calls for an urgent criminal investigation.

Adilbek Kozybakov, Chair of the Mangystau Regional Environmental Council, highlighted the significant financial loss associated with the deaths. Based on a 2017 decree from the Ministry of Agriculture, the value of one seal is set at 193 monthly calculation indicators (MCI), equivalent to 712,556 tenge. Multiplying this by the number of deceased animals brings the total estimated loss to over 1.42 billion tenge.

“Even the death of a single animal is grounds for initiating a criminal case,” Kozybakov stated. “This is a case of mass killing, which requires an immediate and thorough investigation.”
