Central Asia Hosts 9th Criminal Justice Experts Forum

The 9th Forum of Criminal Justice Experts of Central Asian Countries is currently taking place in Astana.

The event has brought together a wide range of participants, including judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys, representatives of international organizations, civil society, and criminal justice systems from across the region. Key topics of discussion include judicial system reforms, the independence of defense lawyers, pre-trial investigations, probation-based criminal enforcement, and the digitalization of criminal justice processes.

“We are hosting many esteemed guests—our colleagues from various fields of criminal justice. This forum provides a platform to discuss key reforms in the judiciary, share experiences, and learn from the significant reforms implemented in other countries. I believe this forum will have a profound impact on the development of our domestic criminal justice system,” said Erkes Maukен, a Justice of the Supreme Court of Kazakhstan.

He further emphasized that the forum aims to identify effective reforms and adopt the best practices discussed during the sessions.

Mauken also highlighted the recent significant reforms in Kazakhstan’s judicial system, including the establishment of cassation courts, which are set to begin operations on July 1, 2025.
