Kyrgyzstan Detains Social Democrats Party Members in Vote-Buying Case Ahead of Local Elections

Authorities in Kyrgyzstan have detained representatives of the Social Democrats party following accusations of vote-buying in the upcoming local council elections scheduled for November 17, 2024.

The Bishkek City Police Department reported that audio evidence surfaced on social media on November 13, allegedly capturing a conversation between Irina Karamushkina, chief of staff of the Social Democrats, and Daniyar Cholponbaev, a candidate for the Bishkek City Council. In the recording, the two purportedly discuss strategies to buy votes for the party.

In response, the Bishkek City Police’s Investigative Service launched a criminal investigation under Article 196 of Kyrgyzstan’s Criminal Code, which deals with vote-buying offenses. Investigative procedures and necessary measures are underway as the case develops.

The upcoming elections for local council deputies, including those in Bishkek and Osh, are considered significant. In light of recent events, President Sadyr Japarov addressed the nation, emphasizing the importance of fair elections and integrity in the voting process.
