Kazakhstan and Russia Formalize Shared Use of +7 Telephone Code

Kazakhstan has officially ratified an agreement with Russia to jointly use the international telephone code +7. Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov signed the agreement, as documented on Kazakhstan’s legal portal, Adilet.

The agreement outlines specific code ranges assigned to each country: Kazakhstan will use ranges 000-099, 600-699, and 700-799, while Russia will retain exclusive rights to ranges such as 200-299 and 900-999. Certain ranges, including 100-199 and 800-809, will be jointly used.

Each country will independently manage code allocation within these shared ranges per national regulations, ensuring exclusive use within their respective telephone networks.

Kazakhstan initially explored adopting a unique international code in 2021, considering options like +997 or +77. However, in late 2023, the Kazakh Ministry of Digital Development decided to retain the +7 code, citing substantial financial and technical obstacles to switching.
