Kazakhstan Plans New Road to Shorten Route to Mongolia

Kazakhstan is planning to build a new road that will significantly reduce both the distance and travel time between Kazakhstan and Mongolia.

Maksat Bayakhmet, Deputy Chairman of the Committee for Roads of the Ministry of Transport of Kazakhstan, participated in a meeting focused on cooperation in the transport sector between the two countries. During the meeting, key issues related to road infrastructure were discussed, including plans to shorten the route connecting Kazakhstan and Mongolia.

The proposed route will pass through Ust-Kamenogorsk and Ridder, as well as the settlement of Tuekta in the Russian Federation, before reaching the Mongolian border. The Kazakh section of the shortened route, stretching 189 kilometers from Ust-Kamenogorsk to the Russian border, has already been constructed, with major and medium repairs planned for a 62-kilometer portion.

Since most of the route will traverse Russian territory, Kazakhstan awaits Russia’s approval to proceed with construction. If approved, the new road will reduce the total distance to 837 kilometers, compared to the current Ust-Kamenogorsk-Rubtsovsk-Barnaul-Tuekta-Mongolia route, which is 1,604 kilometers.
