Baku and Washington Discuss Azerbaijani-Armenian Peace Process
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken held a phone conversation to discuss the ongoing efforts toward normalizing relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia, according to the Azerbaijani presidential press service.
During the call, the two leaders focused on the peaceful resolution of the conflict with Armenia. Blinken expressed the United States’ continued commitment to fostering lasting peace in the region and praised the signing of the agreement on joint activities for border delimitation between Azerbaijan and Armenia on August 30.
President Aliyev highlighted Azerbaijan’s role in establishing a new status quo based on justice and international law and emphasized that Baku initiated the peace treaty with Armenia. He added that Yerevan must drop its territorial claims against Azerbaijan for the treaty to be signed.
The conversation also touched on preparations for the upcoming COP29 conference in Baku, with Blinken expressing U.S. support for the event and noting close cooperation between the U.S. and Azerbaijani teams.
Meanwhile, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that 80% of the peace treaty’s text has been agreed upon by both sides and urged for the signing of the already agreed provisions soon. Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev also confirmed Kazakhstan’s readiness to continue providing the Almaty platform for peace negotiations between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
