Turkmenistan to Launch Regional Climate Technology Hub Ahead of COP29
Turkmenistan has announced plans to finance the initial phase of a UN-led regional climate technology center in its capital, Ashgabat. The first updates on the project are expected to be revealed ahead of the COP29 summit in Baku this November.
Speaking at the Turkmenistan Investment Forum (TIF 2024), UN Resident Coordinator Dmitry Shlapachenko praised the country’s initiative to address climate change, which he described as a pressing issue for Central Asia. He highlighted that no single nation can tackle this challenge alone, emphasizing the importance of the regional climate technology hub.
The center will focus on climate change mitigation technologies, including green energy projects, and will help build capacity for adopting best practices in the region. Turkmenistan’s commitment to fund the center’s early stages is seen as a significant step toward regional cooperation on climate action.
The Turkmenistan Investment Forum, which runs from September 10 to 11, is aimed at attracting foreign investment, particularly in sectors like hydrocarbons, gas chemistry, electric power, and transport. The event also features sessions with experts from UN agencies, the WTO, and other international organizations, alongside an exhibition showcasing the country’s economic achievements.
