Iran Registers Candidates for Upcoming Presidential Elections
On June 28, Iran will hold early presidential elections following the death of President Ebrahim Raisi in a plane crash. The official registration of candidates began on Thursday, May 30, and will last for five days.
Candidates must register in person at the Iranian Ministry of Interior. After registration, the 12-member Council of Guardians of the Constitution will review the candidates’ ideological suitability.
The final list of approved candidates will be announced on June 11, followed by a two-week campaign period. If no candidate secures an absolute majority in the first round, a second round will be held on July 5 to determine the new president.
The President of Iran is the second most important official in the country, serving as the head of the executive branch and performing representative functions. The President is elected for a four-year term and can serve a maximum of two consecutive terms.
