Chingiz Aitmatov Honored with Monument in Turkmenistan’s Mahtumkulu Firaki Park
In a tribute to the esteemed Kyrgyz writer Chingiz Aitmatov, a monumental statue has been unveiled in Mahtumkulu Firaki Park, inaugurated on May 17, 2024, in the heart of Ashgabat, Turkmenistan's capital.
Standing tall at 3.5 meters, the bronze monument pays homage to Chingiz Aitmatov, a revered figure in Kyrgyz literature and a cherished icon across the Turkic world. Placed within the Mahtumkulu Firaki Culture and Park Complex, the statue adds to the rich tapestry of Turkmenistan’s cultural landscape.
The initiative to establish Mahtumkulu Firaki Park, spearheaded by former President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, saw its fruition with the grand opening on May 17, 2024. President Serdar Berdimuhammedov of Turkmenistan graced the occasion, emphasizing the park’s significance, which now boasts nearly 25 statues commemorating Turkmen and shared Turkic world values.
In a broader cultural context, 2024 was designated by the International Turkic Cultural Organization (TURKSOY) as the year of Turkmen writer and poet Mahtumkulu Firaki. Concurrently, Anev city in Turkmenistan earned the prestigious title of cultural capital of the Turkic world, underscoring the nation’s profound cultural heritage and contributions.
