Previously, the Criminal Code exempted women, individuals under 18 years old, and men over 60 from life imprisonment for such crimes. However, the new amendments allow for life imprisonment to be imposed on men in this category if they commit offenses against the sexual integrity and freedom of children.
Furthermore, changes have been made to the Criminal Procedure Code, eliminating the possibility for courts to render guilty verdicts without imposing punishment in cases of crimes against children’s sexual integrity and freedom.
The law takes effect upon official publication.
This move follows the passing of another law in January, which prohibited the reconciliation of parties in rape cases, signaling Kyrgyzstan’s commitment to combating sexual violence and protecting children from such crimes.
