The decision was made during a meeting attended by Iran’s First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber, who is currently acting as President, Judiciary Chief Gholam Hossein Mohseni-Ejei, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Vice President for Legal Affairs Mohammad Dehghan, and representatives from the Constitutional Council and the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
This meeting followed the tragic death of President Ebrahim Raisi and several members of his team, including Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian. They were declared dead after a helicopter crash near Varzakan district, approximately 670 km from Tehran.
As per Article 131 of the Iranian Constitution, if the president is unable to fulfill his duties, the First Vice President assumes executive power and must organize a new presidential election within 50 days.
The meeting also established a detailed timetable for the electoral process, which includes the formation of executive committees, candidate registration, and the initiation of election campaigns. Candidate registration will occur from May 30 to June 3, followed by campaign activities from June 12 to 27.
The Constitutional Council has initially approved this schedule, ensuring that the election process proceeds as planned.
