Mosquito and Midge Control Initiatives Launched in Capital
With the onset of favorable weather conditions, the Department of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Management in Astana has commenced inspections of water bodies and wetlands to assess the presence of mosquito larvae, with scientific support.
According to The city’s Akimat (regional executive body) press service, the scientific support aims to survey all temporary and permanent reservoirs to identify various stages of mosquito larval development, actively locate breeding sources and their shelters, and determine optimal times for disinfection treatments to curb the emergence of adult mosquitoes. This proactive approach allows for early intervention in their lifecycle.
Simultaneously, measures to combat flying mosquitoes will be implemented in parks, squares, and residential areas.
These measures will be conducted during nighttime hours from 9:00 PM to 4:00 AM. Residents and visitors are advised to take precautions during these treatments:
- Minimize visits to treated areas.
- Keep windows closed during treatment.
These pest control efforts aim to reduce the number of nuisance insects rather than eradicate them, recognizing their role in the natural ecosystem.
Various tools, including mechanical rotary sprayers, pest control vehicles, and quadcopters, will be utilized to access hard-to-reach areas with reed vegetation and large reservoirs. Specially equipped boats will handle treatments in large bodies of water.
Approved pest control products, compliant with guidelines for use in Kazakhstan and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), will be employed. Additionally, environmentally friendly biological agents will be used for larval stage disinfection in water bodies this year.
Over 150 disinfectors trained in professional pest control methods will participate in large-scale treatments. Participation is also encouraged from management companies, housing developers, and various facilities to improve drainage and carry out disinfection treatments in basements during these activities.
