The Ukrainian Parliament Passes Controversial Mobilization Law
The Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament, has approved a contentious law tightening mobilization regulations in the country. The legislation has sparked dissatisfaction among many soldiers due to its removal of the right to demobilization after 36 months of wartime service.
The mobilization bill was initially introduced to the Verkhovna Rada twice. It was first presented by the government in December, but following public debate, the document underwent revisions. A revised version of the bill was subsequently submitted to the Verkhovna Rada in early January and was approved in the first reading on February 7.
Since then, the legislation has been refined by the Law Enforcement Committee. The bill is expected to take effect approximately a month after the president signs it into law, likely around mid-May.
