Azerbaijan Thwarts Alleged Terrorist Scheme

Authorities in Azerbaijan have intercepted a suspected terrorist plot, leading to the arrest of Bahruz Askerov, a native of Murmansk in Russia, for allegedly orchestrating planned attacks on a government official and an English teacher, as well as organizing military activities abroad.

The State Security Service (SSS) of Azerbaijan disclosed the detainment of Bahruz Askerov, a dual citizen of Azerbaijan and Russia, amidst suspicions of orchestrating a series of terrorist acts within the country.

According to the SSS, Askerov purportedly coordinated a group of individuals to carry out assassination attempts on a high-ranking government official in Lankaran city and a foreign English teacher.

“Through our investigation, it was revealed that Bahruz Askerov, born in 1988, engaged individuals residing in various regions of Azerbaijan in clandestine activities, instructing them to plan an assassination attempt on the executive leader of Lankaran,” stated the service.

Furthermore, it was disclosed that Askerov had intentions to arrange military training in a foreign nation for individuals with whom he had established contact. However, the State Security Service’s intervention thwarted the execution of these planned criminal activities.

Askerov faces charges related to terrorism preparations and is currently in custody, with authorities initiating a criminal case against him under Azerbaijan’s relevant legal statutes. The investigation remains ongoing to elucidate all aspects of the case.

This incident follows a similar interception by the State Security Service in February of the previous year, where they successfully foiled a terrorist plot targeting a foreign embassy. Media sources reported the arrest of an individual who allegedly intended to detonate the Israeli Embassy in Baku.
