Transnational Organized Crime Group Foiled in Assassination Attempt on Kyrgyz Leadership

Authorities in Kyrgyzstan have successfully thwarted a plot by members of a transnational organized crime group aimed at assassinating the country's leadership.

The State Committee for National Security of Kyrgyzstan reported the arrest of individuals allegedly involved in the scheme. According to the committee’s press service, during operational activities targeting organized criminal groups involving foreign nationals and individuals wanted by multiple countries, attention was drawn to five Azerbaijani citizens suspected of belonging to such a group. The individuals identified were Aliyev V.M., Baghirov S.A., Asgarov M.O., Bekhbudrv M.S., and Mammadov Z.I.

Operational intelligence revealed that Asgarov M.O., known in criminal circles as a “vagabond,” along with his accomplices, had entered Kyrgyzstan with the intention of organizing an assassination attempt on the country’s leadership. This plan allegedly emerged amidst Kyrgyzstan’s robust efforts to combat organized crime, impacting various post-Soviet states including Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Belarus.

The group’s hostile intentions reportedly arose due to the Kyrgyz State Committee for National Security’s initiatives to combat criminal ideology and promote state policies among incarcerated individuals and those at large, a move that garnered disapproval from foreign criminal leaders.

In response to the threat, Kyrgyzstan’s State Committee for National Security conducted decisive operational measures on March 22, 2024, resulting in the apprehension of all suspects. Investigations are currently ongoing to prosecute them in accordance with Kyrgyz Republic law.

This successful intervention underscores Kyrgyzstan’s commitment to safeguarding its leadership and upholding the rule of law against transnational criminal activities.
