Tamás Szújok, Chairman of the Constitutional Court, has been elected as the new President of Hungary by the Hungarian Parliament, TuraNews.kz reports citing the Anadolu agency.
Szújok’s candidacy received the support of 134 parliamentarians, while five deputies opposed it.
A legal advisor and lawyer, Szújok previously served as an honorary consul of Austria. He has been a member of the Constitutional Court for a decade, assuming the role of chairman in 2016.
The election comes after Hungarian President Katalin Nowak announced her resignation on February 10 amidst a scandal surrounding the pardon of an individual convicted of concealing a sexual abuse case in an orphanage.
