Kyrgyzstan Joins Convention on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons

The purpose of the Convention is to develop international cooperation in the field of criminal law.

Kyrgyzstan has officially acceded to the Convention on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons, a move aimed at fostering international cooperation in the realm of criminal law. President Sadyr Japarov signed the Law of the Kyrgyz Republic regarding the accession to the convention, which was adopted by the Jogorku Kenesh (parliament) on December 20, 2023.

This legislation establishes a legal framework for the transfer of convicted individuals between Kyrgyzstan and other member states of the Council of Europe, as well as additional states that have become parties to the Convention. The primary objective is to enable convicted persons to serve the remainder of their sentences in their home countries.

By joining the Convention on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons, Kyrgyzstan aims to strengthen international collaboration in the field of criminal law. The convention provides a mechanism for the transfer of individuals convicted in one country to serve their sentences in their country of citizenship, facilitating effective law enforcement cooperation.

The law will come into effect ten days from the official date of publication.
