Kazakhstan’s Population Grows to 19.9 Million by September 1, 2023, with Varied Regional Trends
As of September 1, 2023, the population of Kazakhstan reached 19.9 million people, reflecting a 1.41% increase compared to the previous year, TuraNews.kz reports citing Finprom.kz.
At the beginning of the year, the country’s population stood at 19.8 million, experiencing a growth rate of 1.35%. Generally, Kazakhstan’s population growth has ranged between 1.28% and 1.49%, with the exception of 2022 when an unprecedented growth rate of 3.3% was recorded.
The leading regions in terms of population as of September 1, 2023, were Almaty (2.2 million people), Turkestan (2.1 million people), and Almaty (1.5 million people) regions. Conversely, the regions with the smallest populations were Ulytau, North Kazakhstan, and Abay, totaling 221.5 thousand, 531.7 thousand, and 608.9 thousand people, respectively.
However, a decline in population was observed in several regions, including North Kazakhstan, Abay, Zhetysu, East Kazakhstan, and Kostanay.
Regarding gender distribution, the number of men increased by 1.4% over the year, reaching 9.6 million people, while the number of women increased by 1.3% to 10.1 million people. Women outnumbered men, constituting 4.9% more of the total population.
Children under the age of 18 accounted for 35.5% of the country’s population, totaling around 7 million people. The country also had 2.7 million young adults aged under 29.
Additionally, the population aged between 60 and 69 years comprised 1.6 million people, those aged from 70 to 79 numbered 681.6 thousand, and individuals over 80 years old totaled 317.3 thousand.
