The Central Election Commission of Kazakhstan has officially concluded the nomination phase for candidates in the forthcoming elections of maslikhat (Maslikhat is a local representative body (parliament) in Kazakhstan that is elected by a population of a region, district and city) deputies, scheduled to be held on October 29, 2023, TuraNews.kz reports.
The elections are slated to occur in 21 constituencies spread across 11 regions within Kazakhstan, encompassing Abay, Aktobe, Almaty, East Kazakhstan, Zhambyl, Zhetysu, Karaganda, Mangistau, Pavlodar, North Kazakhstan regions, as well as the city of Almaty.
During the election campaign, a total of 109 candidates threw their hats into the ring. Notably, 28 of these hopefuls were nominated by political parties, while a significant majority of 81 candidates chose the path of self-nomination.
Breaking down the gender composition of the nominees, 93 of them, constituting 85.32% of the total, were men, whereas the remaining 16 individuals, making up 14.68%, were women.
Further examination of the candidate pool reveals that 66 contenders hold memberships in various political parties within Kazakhstan, 21 are non-partisan candidates, and an additional 22 did not specify their party affiliations.
The average age of the nominees stands at 42.21 years, reflecting a diverse range of ages among those vying for the seats. Notably, the candidates hail from five different ethnic groups, showcasing the nation’s rich cultural diversity.
A significant portion of the candidates, specifically 94 of them (86.2%), possess higher education qualifications, while 12 (11%) hold specialized secondary education degrees, and 3 (2.8%) have completed secondary education.
In terms of professional backgrounds, 27.52% of the candidates are currently employed within government agencies and organizations, with 43.12% working in various commercial enterprises. Additionally, 8.26% of the candidates are affiliated with political parties and non-governmental organizations, while 2.7% are temporarily unemployed. Furthermore, 1.83% of the candidates are retirees, and the remaining 16.51% represent various other employment sectors.
As of September 28, 2023, district election commissions have officially registered 44 candidates. However, it’s essential to note that the registration deadline remains open until 18:00 on October 3 of the current year.
