Death toll from Morocco earthquake rises to 2,012

The death toll from the earthquake that struck Morocco on Friday has risen to 2,012, with 2,059 people injured, according to the Moroccan Ministry of Interior. Of the injured, 1,404 are in critical condition, Turanews.kz reports.

The earthquake, which had a magnitude of 6.8, occurred in the Atlas Mountains region, about 70 kilometers southwest of Marrakech. It was followed by aftershocks, including one with a magnitude of 4.9.

The earthquake caused widespread damage in the affected area. Many buildings were destroyed, including homes, businesses, and historical landmarks. There are also reports of people being trapped under the rubble.

Rescue workers are working to evacuate the injured and search for survivors. The government has declared a state of emergency in the affected areas.

The earthquake is the deadliest to hit Morocco since 2004, when a magnitude 6.3 earthquake killed 628 people in the northern province of Al Hoceima.
