The Turkish women’s volleyball team won the European Championship for the first time in history after defeating Serbia in a five-set thriller in Brussels, Belgium on Sunday, Turanews.kz reports.
The match was tied at 2-2 after four sets, but Turkey came out on top in the deciding set, 15-13.
The Turkish team was led by Ebrar Karakurt, who scored 22 points. Other key contributors included Cansu Ozbay (18 points) and Zehra Gunes (17 points).
Serbia’s Milena Rasic led all scorers with 23 points, but her team was unable to overcome Turkey’s superior defense.
The Netherlands won the bronze medal after defeating Italy in the third-place match.
The European Championship was attended by 24 teams, divided into four groups of six teams each. The four best teams from each group advanced to the 1/8 finals.
This is the third championship in a row where competitions were held in four different countries at the same time. The other countries that hosted the tournament were Poland, Slovakia, and Romania.
The next European Championship will be held in 2025.
