Culture Ministry: “Kyrgyzstan’s TikTok Ban Not Geopolitical”

The government of Kyrgyzstan has blocked the social media platform TikTok in the country, citing concerns about the app’s negative impact on children, Turanews.kz reports.

The Ministry of Culture, Information, Sports and Youth Policy of Kyrgyzstan said that TikTok does not have adequate safeguards to protect children from harmful content. The app also lacks age verification measures, which means that children can easily access content that is not appropriate for them.

“The decision to block TikTok was not made lightly”

“We understand that this is a popular app, but we believe that it is important to protect our children from the risks that it poses.” said a ministry spokesperson.

The ministry said that it has received numerous complaints from parents about the content that their children have been exposed to on TikTok. These complaints have included videos of violence, self-harm, and sexual content.

The ministry said that it is working with TikTok to find a way to block harmful content from the app. However, in the meantime, the government has decided to block the app altogether.

The blocking of TikTok has been met with mixed reactions. Some people have praised the government for taking action to protect children, while others have criticized the move as an infringement on freedom of expression.

The government has said that it will review the blocking of TikTok on a regular basis and may lift the ban if the app is able to address the concerns that have been raised.

In the meantime, parents are advised to talk to their children about the risks of using TikTok and to monitor their online activity.
