The Champions League final will bring €75 million to Istanbul

The UEFA Champions League Final, which will take place on June 10, 2023, at the Atatürk Stadium in Istanbul, is expected to bring an economic benefit of 75 million euros to the Turkish metropolis, Turanews.kz reports citing Anadolu Agency.

An event dedicated to the preparations for the final match took place in Istanbul. The event was organized by the main sponsor of the Champions League, Mastercard.

Speaking at the event, the General Director for Türkiye and Azerbaijan at Mastercard Avsar Gurdal emphasized that the company has been the main sponsor of the Champions League for approximately 30 years.

“This year, the Champions League final will be held in Istanbul. Mastercard analyzed payment card spending in cities that hosted the last three finals. Türkiye’s tourism revenue in 2022 amounted to 44 billion euros, with Istanbul accounting for 40 percent of that. Taking these data into account, it can be predicted that the final match will generate a profit of 75 million euros for Istanbul,” he said.

Murat Cagri Suzer, the deputy general director of Türkiye’s Garanti BBVA, who attended the event, mentioned that fans tend to spend more money on sports memorabilia during important matches.

“For instance, leading up to games, fans increase their shopping in their favorite teams’ stores by approximately 3.5 times. Moreover, there is a 23 percent increase in the overall spending at restaurants on matchdays,” he said.
